Compassion has the power to transform lives, especially for older adults who may experience loneliness or isolation. While many people think about giving during the holiday season, the need for kindness, friendship, and connection exists every day of the year. Whether it’s a handwritten card, a friendly visit, or volunteering in your community, even the smallest act of compassion can remind someone they are seen, valued, and loved.

At the Holiday Project, we believe compassion has no season. Through visits, greeting cards, volunteer opportunities, and community support, we work year-round to bring hope and meaningful connection to older adults. Together, we can make every season a little brighter—one act of kindness at a time.

1. Create Handmade Cards

A handwritten note or colorful card can bring unexpected joy to someone who may not receive many visitors. Invite your children or grandchildren to draw pictures, write encouraging messages, or share a favorite Bible verse. These simple gestures remind older adults that they are remembered and valued.

2. Assemble Care Packages

Put together small gift bags filled with practical and comforting items such as puzzle books, tissues, lip balm, socks, sugar-free treats, bottled water, or travel-size toiletries. Before donating, check with your local senior community to see what items are most needed.

3. Spend Time Visiting

One of the greatest gifts you can offer is your time. Visit an elderly neighbor, volunteer with the Holiday Project, or stop by a local senior living community if volunteer opportunities are available. A conversation, a shared laugh, or simply listening to someone’s stories can make a tremendous impact. In fact, the National Institute on Aging explains that maintaining meaningful social connections can help reduce feelings of loneliness and improve the overall well-being of older adults. Learn more about social isolation and loneliness in older adults on the National Institute on Aging’s website.

4. Organize a Family Donation Drive

Summer is a perfect time to involve children in serving others. Collect greeting cards, activity books, blankets, personal care items, or other requested supplies for seniors. Working together teaches children that generosity isn’t something we practice only during the holidays.

5. Share Joy Through Community Service

Volunteer as a family during Holiday Project events or find opportunities to serve older adults in your neighborhood. Whether you’re delivering cards, participating in special programs, or helping organize donations, your kindness helps create meaningful connections that last far beyond a single visit.

Kindness Has No Season

The need for compassion doesn’t end when the holidays are over. Many older adults experience loneliness throughout the year, and every act of kindness helps remind them they are seen, appreciated, and loved. Organizations like AARP also emphasize that staying socially connected and engaged can improve quality of life for older adults while strengthening families and communities.

We are committed to bringing hope and companionship to older adults in nursing homes, assisted living communities, and other care settings through the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of supporters. Whether you have an hour to volunteer, supplies to donate, or simply a heart to encourage others, your involvement makes a lasting difference.

Together, we can build stronger communities where older adults experience friendship, dignity, and joy—not just during the holidays, but every day of the year. Visit our events page to stay up to date on ways to volunteer with the Holiday Project.Â
